The Commonwealth Youth Games are a small-scale version of the Commonwealth Games, designed for children and young people. The inaugural Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2000, and the second in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, in 2004. The third Games took place in Pune, India, in 2008, and were viewed in part as a test event for the 2010 main Commonwealth Games. The fourth Games are scheduled to take place in Douglas, Isle of Man, in 2011. From 2011 onwards the Games will revert to a four-yearly cycle. The hosting of the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games has been awarded to Apia, Samoa. Wrexham in Wales has so far expressed an interest in hosting the 2019 Commonwealth Youth Games
Glasgow has only hosted the Commonwealth Games one time. This was in 2014. However, Scotland has hosted the Commonwealth Games three times. Edinburgh in 1970, and 1986. Glasgow in 2014. Additionally, the Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh in 2000.

Valerie Villi was born in Rotorua and is of Tongan descent. She was the world youth shot-put champion in 2001. In 2002, she scored a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games as the world junior champion. In the 2005 World Championships, she scored a bronze medal. In 2006, she won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games and came in second in the World Athletic Final.
All competitors in the Commonwealth Youth Games will be a minimum of 14 and maximum of 18 in the year of competition (i.e, their 18th birthday is during the calendar year in which the Games is held) and a maximum number of 1000 competitors are invited to participate from every Commonwealth Games Association.
