Yuri Gagarin was an officer in the Soviet ("Russian") Air Force.
In April 1961, he became the first human being to [almost] orbit the Earth. He
and his spacecraft, the Vostok-I, were launched from the Baikonur Kosmodrome
in Kazakhstan. They achieved orbit, and went for one complete revolution. Just
before touchdown, Gagarin parachuted from the capsule, and they landed
separately.
Gagarin's total time aloft, from launch to touchdown, was 108 minutes. His
touchdown spot was a few hundred yards short of the launch point ... just shy
of one complete trip around the world. He never flew another space mission,
and was killed in the crash of a training aircraft 7 years later, at the age of 34.
