Wales were the first country to adopt this. Just before an international rugby game against New Zealand in 16th December 1905. Following the HAKA the Welsh crowd in unison with the Welsh team sang "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau - Land Of My Fathers". This appears to be the first time in any international sporting event that an anthem was sung. (Wales won the game 3 - 0).
