He put his cello aside to become an outstanding conductor. In the '60s he became conductor of the Honolulu Symphony. he resigned in '78, toured the world conducting. Maestro retired to his home in Hawaii where he gave cello lessons to a fortunate few. Unfortunately, he died of COPD, September 30, 2004 at age 75.
