What are the rules in the dressage?

Each type of show has its own dress code, based on both discipline and level of show.

If showing at a "fun show" or in a non-competitive atmosphere, you can probably wear whatever you want. Because you are showing off your accomplishments, you want to look clean and professional. As a general rule:

• English disciplines: tan breeches, neutral coloured polo shirt tucked in, black belt, black boots, black helmet, black gloves
• Western disciplines: jeans, boots with a heel, western shirt, cowboy hat or helmet

For western, you can continue to wear the described above through the higher levels, though chaps may be desired. Go to a few shows before your show date to see what's in style.

If you are showing at any level besides the lowest, grass-roots level, the dress code is more formal for english disciplines. Though styles come and go, this is the norm right now on the show circuit:

• Hunters: black helmet with hair in hairnet and put up in helmet, white show shirt tucked in, black/navy/grey show jacket with 3 buttons, tan knee patch breeches, black belt, black tall boots (or paddock boots and jodhpur straps if you're under 12 years old), black gloves
• Jumpers: conservatively coloured helmet, white show shirt, black/navy/grey show jacket with 3 or 4 buttons, tan knee patch breeches (white in special classes only), belt, brown/black tall boots, gloves
• Dressage: black helmet (or top hat at higher levels) with hair in a hairnet in a braided bun, white show shirt, black show jacket, black or white gloves, white breeches, black boots

No matter what level or discipline, the emphasis is on clean and tidy everything. Spend the extra hour cleaning everything before hand and make sure everything is well fitting.

The rules for dressage vary from show to show, the basic goal of showing dressage is be so in-tune with the horse that it appears to on-lookers that the rider doesnt have to ask their horse to do anything, they just float along together with effortlessness, when in fact it takes immense strengthand concentration to appear this way. Dressage is very exact, try watching a dressage test on YouTube and you will see how beautiful and easy-looking it is, but I garentee if you were to ask that rider they would tell you how much practice and focus it takes. Because of this Dressage is often refered to as Ballet on horseback, when watching an experianced ballerina preform it appears simple but any ballerina will tell you otherwise. Im not sure if I have helped you much, but try looking up a specific show online to get an idea of the rules or criteria they usually have

it depends if the compeitiion is not very formal you can wear cream breeches and a long sleeve top
