You have to be knowledgeable in all aspects of the car, motor,drivetrain, shocks, tires, air-flow, weight bias as to handling, then you have to pull all these factors together to please your specific driver, you have heard them say 1/2lb down here, a 1/2 turn there, being able to please a driver with a well balanced car (that he likes) is very difficult, that's why a good crew chief is hard to find.
