First, you should get a good size. It's great if it's a little big, so when your size gets bigger, you can still wear them. Practice in an open area. You should have a movement kind of like slightly lunging forward, and turning can be pretty easy. Its much easier to have someone help you for the first time.

After many many years of ice skating and racing on ice. Being at the time no indoor ice rinks I'd try roller skating. I found is wasn't much different then ice skating. The body and balance positions were different. But nothing really different UNTIL I started talking Artist Dance lessons. Now after many many years of doing Artistic Dance competition on roller skates I feel the only BIG difference is in "edges" Ice skate have one blade per boot--that blade has an inside edge and a outside edge. Roller skates have four wheels and each wheel has an inside edge and a outside edge. Also looking at an ice skate blade note now narrow or how close the inside edge and the outside edges are. Ice there is ONE blade per boot - each blade is 1/8 inch wide which makes the edges very narrow. Roller skates skate wheels are 1-1/8 INCH wide. Outside wheel to outside wheel across is 4 inch's and have 4 wheels per boot. Ice skates you can "dig" into the ice on an edge. Roller skates you can dig in BUT what really happens is you "slip" like a car going fast around an Icey corner. I found a roller skating vender who offered me a set of wheels with a bit of a wider edge and a little softer edge. They gripe on very deep edges almost like rubber cups. I would venter to say IF there was a measured area to test ice skate deep edges and roller skate deep edges they would be almost the same IF the skates are "properly" setup for deep edging

Buy a good FITTING roller skate - either used or new. At your local roller rink, for a price you can take lessons, or if you prefer you can learn to roller skate in your home, in your back yard for free!! Two MUST thinks to learn to roller skate are-- (1) body position -- stand up on skates on a CARPERED floor. Hold head high, back straight, shoulders back, head up, knees bent----look down and bend your knees about two to three Inchs from the tip of your skate. That should enough!! Now WALK on the skates. When you FEEL comfortable walking. At the rink or at home on a uncarpeted floor--holding onto something, assume the correct body position. Holding onto sometime roll one skate forward to a count of two, bring other skate along side. Again with other skate roll to a count of two. WHEN you feel comfortable doing this----try rolling on a uncarpeted area to the count of two for each skate. That's about it! The rest is up to you--when YOU feel comfortable----go to the rink, and holding onto a railing roll to the count of two on each skate UNTIL YOU feel comfortable------then try roller skating without holding on-----and go and have fun!!!

If you are good at roller skating are you good at ice skating?

Not necessarily, though you may have a bit of an advantage in learning over someone who's never skated at all. One of the big issues is the same as that between roller skating and roller blading: skates automatically remain vertical; blades want to tip over to the side.
