Yes, school sports were very popular in the 1920s, as they are today. Colleges had some of the same rivalries then as they do now-- the Harvard-Yale football game, for example, drew plenty of attention, as did the rivalry between Army and Navy. Since there were fewer professional sports leagues in the 1920s, the public paid more attention to the college games. The one difference back then was that female students were not encouraged to compete in team sports, since it was still widely believed in the culture that girls were too fragile to play most sports. Some girls did play tennis or golf (especially at all-girls schools); but nearly every coeducational school and college focused on boys' sports almost exclusively.
USA Today High School Girls' Basketball Coach of the Year was created in 1983.
Until recently girls weren't considered smart enough to go to school. Still, in some countries girls are not allowed to attend school. Some parents today also use older girls to babysit the younger children in the family.
In colonial times, most girls did not go to school in the sense we use today, and received no grades.
Of course girls must attend school, or if they choose to, they may be home educated, too. American Indians today are no different than their non-native counterparts.
The motto of Southend High School for Girls is 'Glory to God'.
