if you mean bindings its to hold your foot on the board.

if you mean the leash (the thing that usually attaches your binding to your boot) its so if you take your board off it wont slide downhill or it wont fall off the lift if your binding comes unstrapped. some resorts require you to have a leash but usually they dont check
