The Canadiens are the longest continuously operating professional ice hockey team and the only existing NHL club to predate the founding of the NHL. (They celebrated their 100th birthday this season.) The franchise is one of the "Original Six" teams. The Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups, more than any other team. (On a percentage basis, as of 2008, the franchise has won 26% of all Stanley Cup championships.)
The Montreal Canadiens won the Stanley Cup five times in a row in the 1960s. Runners up, like the Islanders, have won the Stanley cup four times in a row. Nowadays, it is almost impossible to win more than one in a row because of the salary cap.The Montreal Canadiens won five consecutive Stanley Cups between the 1955-56 and 1959-60 seasons.
