Wow. Hell, this could take a while.

He was huge in his own native Motherland of Russia... but once he jettisoned the country, he made a splash forty times bigger in the U.S. of A. As huge as Rudolph Nureyev did, Misha's was much, much bigger.

Every hallmark in the field of ballet was always a Russian--Nijinsky, Pavolva, Baryshnikov, Makarova, Makalov. And choreographer George Balanchine. In the defining of ballet, it was a toss-up between Baryshnikov and Balanchine.

A multi-winning gold medalist, named the "Nijinsky" of his time, a household name even to non-balletomanes, was Artistic Director of the American Ballet Theatre for ten years--and it's most celebrated name. For his acting performance in 1977's "The Turning Point" (more or less playing himself), he earned himself an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination. He has Emmys for his ballet work on television. He played "himself" in other roles, other movies.

He also bedded more women than Chamberlain. They should retire his Jersey! All those ballerinas he partnered would kill to dance with him as much as they would get into his tights--and try to get him in theirs.

Russia defined so much of what ballet was about. And so did he in general.
