The difference between an "adult", "teen" and a "kid's" helmet is mainly in design and somewhat in fit. They should offer the same amount of protection as long as they qualify to the same standard.

Helmets are mainly foamed plastic, and they get more brittle as they age. They should be replaced something like every three years, and after every crash.
