Emmitt Smith was drafted 17th overall by the Dallas Cowboys in 1990.
He played with the Cowboys until the end of the 2002, when he was released. He was signed by the Arizona Cardinals, where he played for 2 seasons.
Following the 2004 season Smith announced his intention to retire from NFL Football. The Cardinals released him from his contract, three days before Super Bowl XXXIX, in February 2005, where he was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, on a one day, zero dollar contract. This allowed Smith to retire as a Cowboy, which he immediately did.
