== == James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts but at the time he used a soccer ball. U.S. patent #1,718,305 was granted to G.L. Pierce on June 25, 1929 for the "basketball" used in the game. Spaulding was one of the first companies that manufactured basketballs. The first formal rules were devised in 1892. Initially, players dribbled a soccer ball up and down a court of unspecified dimensions. Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket. Iron hoops and a hammock-style basket were introduced in 1893. Another decade passed, however, before the innovation of open-ended nets put an end to the practice of manually retrieving the ball from the basket each time a goal was scored. In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (called the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.) Tony Hinkle designed the current orange ball that is in use today. He introduced it in the 1950's so that the players and spectators would be able to see it more clearly.James Naismith
Basketball was invented by James Naismith in Springfield Mass. in 1891. He originated basketball as a gymnasium sport. The game was originally played with a soccer ball and two peach bushel baskets, from which the game took its name. He was asked to devise a new indoor winter sport. His version of basketball called for nine players (later reduced to five) per team and the use of peach baskets (later netted hoops) as goals.
Yes, composite leather basketballs are suitable for outdoor use as they are more durable and can withstand the wear and tear of outdoor surfaces better than genuine leather basketballs.
When James Naismith invented the game, the hoop was a peach basket WITH the bottom still in it.
He used a soccer ball at first then he changed it.
Basketballs in the olden days were made of leather but then again they used soccer balls too!
Answer James Naismith, a Canadian, invented basketball in 1891. Naismith was a physical-education instructor at the School for Christian Workers (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. Luther H. Gulick, head of the school's physical-education department, asked Naismith to create a team sport that could be played indoors during the winter. For his new game, Naismith decided to use a soccer ball because it was large enough to catch easily. He then asked the building superintendent for two boxes to use as goals. The superintendent had no boxes but provided two peach baskets. The baskets were attached to a gymnasium balcony railing 10 feet (3 meters) above the floor. The first game took place between members of Naismith's physical-education class in December 1891.
