Ye they were. The game was originally very armature and having bottled water, physios etc just didn't happen. The use of the "magic sponge " was as close to doctor being called to an injury as it came. The use of Oranges was in some Rugby clubs the only half time refreshments available until the game ended and the club house was invaded or the local public house saw 30 plus parched rugby players hitting the bar for the rest of the night. The orange also have vitamin C in as well and quenched some very powerful thirst. The peel was then thrown to the ground. Water bottle at that time were glass which of course you could not take on the pitch at all. The home team was responsible for this welcomed delight and a sub or club member was made responsible for dishing out half oranges to the opposing team and any officials
Before water bottles strangely enough a bucket with a cup was used
