Probable only correct answer? Maybe. William Morgan claimed that Naismith stole the idea from Holyoke, who invented the game in 1888-9, two years before Naismith said he invented the game in 1891. There is a 1979 Lawrence Kansas newspaper article that is scanned online that says Holyoke did it, but not much else out there to corroborate this. LIkely we will never know unless someone unearths some archive material.
