Surf lifesaving reels are primarily manufactured by specialized companies that focus on lifesaving and rescue equipment. Notable brands include Kitesurf, Harken, and various local manufacturers in countries with strong surf lifesaving traditions, like Australia and New Zealand. These reels are designed for durability and functionality to assist lifeguards in water rescues. Additionally, some custom options may be available from smaller, specialized equipment makers.

Lyster Ormsby, a member of the Bondi Surf Bathers Lifesaving Club in Sydney, Australia invented the first life saving reel in 1906. The original design was intended for a lifesaver wearing a belt, with a rope attached, to reach a distressed swimmer, and be pulled back to the beach by his fellow lifesavers. A better working model based on this design was built by Sgt John Bond of Victoria Barracks in Paddington. This was later improved upon by Sydney coachbuilder G H Olding.
There have been many inventions from Australia. A few are powered flight, the inflatable escape slide, the black box flight recorder, the surf ski, mechanical sheep shears, the stump jump plough, ultrasound, pacemaker, plastic lenses for glasses, and multi-focus contact lens ,

In Australia the flags that we use across the country is a red and yellow striped horizontal flag that marks the safest area to swim on the beach. There are also additional flags that we use: - Red and White diagonal divided flag - indicates an emergency situation and no one should enter the water. - Orange- used for signalling water craft (people on boards or in boats who are part of surf lifesaving) when radio's arent working or aren't available. There are other flags used by clubs to show their specific club for competition also, but there are thousands of surf clubs all over the country and many more around the world.
