2 feet
about 2 or 4 posts
The distance between the goal posts is officially 7 yards; so that is 21 feet. In metric that is 6.4 metres. The width of the goal posts themselves is not official, so this might vary; but the rule states that at lest the bottom 2 metres of each post must be padded as protection. In some grounds, the base of the posts can be even 8 or 9 inches thick due to the padding.
I have played it with young 12 year-olds, playing 6 or 8 afield. You use jumpers/sweaters on the ground for the posts or some other natural element, use a very flat ball that will not travel more than 15 to 20 metres, and play over a 35 to 40 metre rangeLOL! The name of the game is 'improvisation'. You play 2 people on-the-ball [who follow it around], and 1 at each end - defending one end, shooting at goal the other.

In the NFL, goal posts are 10 feet high and 18 1/2 feet wide.
If the ball crosses the goal line and was last touched by a defensive player then there are two possible restarts. 1. If it crossed between the goal posts and under the cross bar, then a goal is awarded and the restart is a kick-off for the defense. 2. If it crossed outside the goal posts or over the cross bar, then the restart is a corner kick for the attackers.
