A coin toss has never been used in the entire history of the NFL... there is such an extensive list of tie-breakers to be used in the event of a tie that it is highly unlikely it will ever be used.

They have been changed gradually over the years and most of the procedures now reflect changes made in 2002. Since 2002, I don't believe that it has gone farther than strength of victory or strength of schedule. It would be an EXTREME coincidence if it ever got to the coin toss with the tie-breaking procedures of today.
