The formation of the Thoroughbred began when humans decided that they wanted a 'super horse' of sorts. One that could run faster than any horse had ever run before. So selective breeding of pony and horse stock began in England until they had developed what was called 'running stock'. These were fast horses that could cover the race distances fairly quickly, but were still 'too slow' for what the people wanted. After that some men went looking for horses that could be used to improve the stock they had and began importing Barbs from north Africa, 'Turk horses (Akhal-tekes) and some Arabian horses. That's how the three foundation sires were eventually found. Once on English soil the stallions were used to breed with the running stock mares and create stronger faster foals that were then raced and bred to each other to create the Thoroughbred breed.
