Athletics was taken up in Rome as a result of Greek influence. The Romans adopted Greek sports, including athletics, and the Greek gymnasium. In Greece athletics was part of the (ancient) Olympic Games. Athletic contests in running, walking, jumping, and throwing are among the oldest of all sports and their roots are prehistoric. There is evidence of athletic games in Egypt dating to 2250 BC and in Ireland to 1800 BC.
Gaelic Football and Hurling are Ireland's two national sports. Many other sports are played like rugby, soccer, golf, horse racing, show jumping, greyhound racing, athletics, swimming, sailing and many others.

The Winter Olympics have competitions for sports that are considered 'cold weather sports' .... sports that can only be done on snow or ice. These sports include skiing, speed skating, and ski jumping. The Summer Olympics have competitions for sports that are considered 'warm weather sports'. These sports include athletics (Track and Field), marathon, and equestrian. There are Winter Olympics and Summer Olympics because you can play different sports in different seasons.
Sports would be a synonym for athletics. Games can be a synonym on a limited basis.
