Proper strength training is not harmful. It is extremely beneficial as well as very safe. There are two problem areas. (1) If you use improper technique, then you are liable to injure yourself. The solution is obvious: learn and use proper technique. (2) If you are too young and your skeleton has not yet completely formed, then you are liable to injure yourself. In my opinion, it is probably best to wait until about the age of 16 to begin serious strength training.
