Yes. Only at Fenway Park in Boston. Fenway's Green Monster is the home of baseball's only in-play ladder, which extends from the upper-left corner of the old scoreboard to the top of The Wall. If the ball bounces off of that and out of play, the batter is awarded three bases.

Updated answer:

Actually, there is not - this is an urban legend. Here is the actual ground rule, from the Boston Red Sox's official website on mlb.com (copied here as Fair Use):

A ball striking the top of the scoreboard in left field in the ladder below top of wall and bounding out of the park is two bases.

Interestingly, the term "ground rule double" as commonly used is itself a misnomer. A "ground rule" is a rule that applies at a specific ballpark - a rule for that "grounds". The ground rules at Fenway Park are different from those at Wrigley Field or any other ballpark. What is commonly called a "ground rule double" should be more properly called an "automatic double" if it applies at all ballparks universally.

Last night, August 13, 2010, Mets v. Phillies, Mike Hessman hit a ball that was called a home run on the field, but after a video review, he was awarded third base--possibly on the umpire's judgment that the ball would have bounced off off the fence and been umplayable until the hitter was on third--a ground rule triple--leading to the line, "Only the Mets could hit a home run and not score." They didn't score that inning, although the replays on-air seemed to indicate that even though the ball had been interferred with by a fan, it would have gone over the relevant orange line.

There is no possible way to get a ground rule triple. There are only ground rule doubles. The only way to get a triple is by getting to third base without a error during the play.

What would the final score be if a team is down by one and has a player hit a ground rule double in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded?

THE SCORE WOULD BE A TIE! Two runs would score on the play and the batter's team would win by one run.

Other than ground rule double what other terms can be used?

Automatic double. Technically, what is often called a ground rule double is not a ground rule double at all, but an automatic double. All baseball fields can have what are called ground rules. These are rules that are specific to that ball field. For example, a ball that lodges in the ivy on the outfield wall at Wrigley Field in Chicago is a double. Then there are the rules that pertain to all ball parks and are described in the rule book. For example, any fair ball that bounds over an outfield fence is a double. This would be an automatic double, although it is commonly referred to as a ground rule double.

What is Ground rule double?

A ground rule double is when a batted ball is ruled fair by the umpires and the ball bounces and goes over or is touched by a player and goes over an outfield wall. In this case, the umpires rule that the batter will be awarded a double.AnswerWhen the ball hits the ground in fair territory, then bounces over the wall. It cannot be a homerun, and the fielder cannot get to the ball, so it is a "Ground Rule Double"- the runner goes to second base, and all base runners can advance two bases.Correction.What is described above is actually an example of an Automatic Double. People who do not know the rules of baseball have mistakenly called this a ground rule double. A ground rule double would be an award of a double that only applies to a specific ball park based on that park's quirky field. Currently there is no park in the MLB that has a ground rule double.

Is it a home run if the defensive player picks up a ground rule double?

No, a ground rule double is ruled by an umpire, and once it is ruled, then it is a double. You may have a case where a ball gets stuck under the padding on the outfield wall, or stuck in the ivy at Wrigley Field, where the fielder will put his hands up asking for a ground rule double. In this case if the umpire does not rule immediately base runners will continue running, when the batter reaches home, the umpire will go out and determine if in fact it is a ground rule double if the ball is actually lost in the ivy of Wrigley Field, or at other ball parks, if the ball is actually stuck under the wall padding. It is up to the umpire at that time to decide if it is a home run or a ground rule double. However, most ground rule doubles involve a ball that is fair and bounces into the stands, if this happens, it cannot be a home run in anyway

Still a ground rule double, only gets two bases.

When a ground rule double happens does it matter if it bounces in fair then foul and out?

No. If the ball lands in fair territory and then bounces over any fence, it is ruled a ground rule double. The only exception would involve fan interference.
