There really is no need to wear a helmet if you're just watching. Foul balls do sometimes pop over fences, but most parks have nets and it is unlikely you will get hit by a ball.
If you are playing, it is necessary to wear a helmet while batting.

∙ 10y agoPlayers are much closer to home plate in softball therefore the ball will travel to the pitcher and to the bases much quicker. There is a far greater chance of getting hit in the face with the ball in softball.
