Trying to catch yourself when falling is the primary cause of injury to the arms and shoulders. You can easily break your arm, wrist or collar bone. You could also dislocate your elbow or shoulder. There are ways of falling so that you can use your arms to protect your head and face without risking breaks to the arm.
The general idea is to cross your hands and put them in front of your face and push your elbows up and out as far as possible. The hands protect your face and the force will be spread out across your arms and chest rather than focused on an bone in the arm. Yes, you may get scraped, but that heals faster than a broken bone!
