In sporting terms - NO it is not necessary as the focus is on achievement of the end goal e.g. winning a race, gold at Olympics etc.

Where personality becomes important is in the sports development/appeal, corporate and commercial sponsorship.

Those people who are generally interviewed after sporting events are the most interesting/controversial people - people with 'personalities' who are able to reach a wide audience.
