They are not an essential item but are advisable. When tackled or tackling there is a strong possibility of the mouth coming in to contact with the ground or other players. The shields do prevent many teeth being knocked out.
Absolutely essential unless you want your teeth knocked out. Or a really nasty concussion (yeah, somehow they supposedly protect against concussions). Although you might get one anyway.
hi, you do not have to wear a gum shield but is best to do so otherwise you may bite of your tongue
There are no regulations in either codes that require a player has to wear a mouth guard. It does state in both code the approved guards that any player can wear.

A gum shield is just another name for a mouth guard. These can be used when playing sports. In sports they will help protect your teeth form getting hurt. Other gum shields are use to help prevent snoring.
It doesn't really matter to be honest. I'm 16 and play without a gum shield. I have bad teeth and have had since before I played rugby, and can't get a shield to properly fit me. It's all down to what your comfortable with but I would recommend Shock Doctor gum shields as they come with insurance if you break your teeth while wearing them and they will pay your dental bill. Hope this is of some help.
To protect your teeth, you should wear a gum shield while playing sports and ensure that you brush them morning and night.
In Singapore it is illegal to chew gum. Singapore forbids any importation of gum that is not for medical purposes.
