Not necessarily. I've seen leagues with teams of one to five. During non-league time, I've seen as many as 10 on a lane. This would take forever to me, but I've seen others do it.
Some centers will choose to charge bowlers on an hourly basis instead of by the game.

There is a Professional Bowlers Association which conducts tournaments and events for pro bowlers. Somewhere inbetween. Most bowlers pick a spot a short way onto the lane and attempt to roll the ball over that spot. One of the arrows that are about 15 feet from the foul line would be a good reference to look at when rolling the ball.
