Probably the actual inventor of the mask will remain unknown. Masks were worn by some goalies after injuries even way back in the early days of hockey. However, goalie Jacques Plante of the Montreal Canadiens is credited with making the mask a permanent part of the goalie's equipment back in the fifties. I would suggest you Google Plante or goalie masks to obtain more information.
12 people are on the ice at the same time (with exeptions of penalties and overtime) 5 players for each team and 1 goalie for each team. But a team may pull their goalie and add one more skater if they really need a goal.

If there where no rules, then people could skate by the goalie punch him in the head knocking off his helmet drilling him some more. meanwhile his team is scoring.

yes. goalie sticks are bigger and shaped differently to be able to have more of a chance of stopping the puck.
