Gymnastics is, in fact, one of the most challenging sports. Strength is a huge factor in gymnastics. Gymnastics is 10% physical and 90% mental. You have to train your mind to do different skills in gymnastics.

Answer

Yes, gymnastics is the most challenging sport there is. This is for a number of reasons. First, most people don't realize that gymnastics was created as a method of training all types of athletes. It was a way to train athletes from other sports as far back as ancient Greece. Later gymnastics was utilized as a method for training the military in more than one country. It become organized as an individual sport later, and then progressed to it's present form during the last 50 years or so. Initially other events were included in gymnastics like rope climb and trampoline, but were later replaced by the modern apparatus.

What makes gymnastics so difficult is that it requires very high levels of upper body strength, extraordinary balance and coordination, as well as a good deal of courage and confidence - and that is just to be an accomplished beginner.

I've challenged athletes from other sports to try some basic skills or even just warm-ups and have found that the vast majority have great difficulty learning these skills. To reach the higher levels in gymnastics takes extraordinary dedication and hard work, especially compared to most other sports. For example, in order to learn a simple back handspring on the floor takes many months or even years to learn for many athletes in the sport. For athletes outside gymnastics it is even more difficult because most are not used to spending so much time and energy to learn a single skill. I've been coaching girls gymnastics for 35 years and during every one of those years, at least one, but usually more of my students end up breaking records in their school for the fitness tests. Such things as sit-ups, push-ups and chin-ups seem relatively easy to gymnasts because those are simply warm-ups or conditioning exercises in gymnastics. I am talking about young girls setting the record in these categories for the entire school-boys and girls together. That says a lot about gymnastics right there.

Another good measuring stick is to compare how ex-gymnasts perform when they take up other sports after leaving gymnastics. Of all the students I've coached, all have moved to the top of the ranks in their chosen sport. It is also worth noting that gymnasts usually look to get involved in more challenging sports such as pole vault, rock climbing and springboard/platform diving. When gymnasts take up more generalized sports such as soccer, track or other school sports they are always among the best regardless of whether they were highly ranked gymnasts.

In the 1970 and 80's there were some TV shows that showcased celebrity athletes competing against each other in an obstacle-course format. Former World Champion Kurt Thomas would have won the competition except for the fact that the weight lifting event was scored on total weight lifted and didn't take that amount into consideration as a percentage of the athlete's body weight. If they had, Kurt would have won by a large margin. And he is only 5'7 tall.

Competitive gymnastics attracts a certain personality type. In fact recreational gymnastics classes has a large share of such personality types as well. These students are more focused, determined and able to work through situations that involve a good deal of fear. Fear is an integral part of gymnastics training because turning upside down will attempting many skills involves risk of serious injury. There are other sports that involve risk, but they are not at the same level or of the same type as gymnastics. Although there are exceptions. For instance, springboard, platform and cliff diving involve similar risks. So does trampoline, trapeze and other acrobatic sports. But for the most part gymnastics is in a class by itself. If you have any doubts, enroll in your local gymnastics school and see how long it takes to learn a back handspring or a round-off. These are basic skills in gymnastics similar to learning to run or throw in Baseball.

I have heard from many people on this question but I have never been convinced that there is another sport as demanding of it's beginner athletes as gymnastics. Elite gymnastics is an entirely different world compared to other sports. There are so many great sports though, and I don't mean to diminish their importance or the challenge they offer their participants. I love all sports and wish I had time to pursue more of them.

Gymnastics is the hardest sport in the world, not Golf. Gymnastics is physically hard and challenging, golf is just tricky.

triathlons, running, swimming and cycling.

absolutely no debate are those the hardest sports, indescribably painful and demanding, you work so hard you don't have time to think and you get into a certain stage of physical condition where the simplest moves at practice or racing require EVERY ounce of will power you have. There are kids as young as 13 in swimming who make the olympic trials. THE TYPICAL college swimmer or senior level swimmer puts in around 3-4 hours 6 times ever week for the WHOLE year. There are people in x country races I've seen running in college who fall flat on their face at the finish line cause they're so tired

I like to think so, but each sport is unique and has different struggles that you must overcome. I think all sports are pretty much equal in the amount of determination and specific skills you need to acquire in order to succeed.

Gymnastics is the hardest sport in the world!! you have no idea what gymnast go through. i would love to see you do a double back handspring on a beam which is only 4 inches! football is not hard. it is a big contact sport so i will give it props but i want to see a football player do over splits and vault and bars and floor and beam. i am a gymnast and you have no idea what we go through. we train as much as the Russia olympic gymnast do a day... and people say that gymnastics isn't hard because we are in pretty leotards and have dance in our floor routine...don't even get me started on conditioning..you climb a 20 ft or longer rope with only hands or do 50 handstand push ups. and conditioning on beam...killers are one of the worst. you have to want to win and you have to work for it. you have to through yourself into danger and you have to be prepared to loose. football players can lose a game and just come back next week and try again...but gymnast if they lose a meet that effects the rest of your gymnastics carrer. its hard...if you won a silver metal in the thing you do best you would probably be proud of your self right...no our coaches would tell us you didnt win the silver, you lost the gold! gymnastics is the hardest sport in the world!--- new person speaking----

I have to agree, im a gymnast. You have to go through, injuries, pain, bruises, broken bones, arguing, ect. You have no idea how hard it is to do what we do. I hate how football pleayers go around saying hah, we won, we are better than all of you, well we sure don't do that when we win a gold medal. were proud of it, but don't brag, they think its hard to tackle a person to the ground so another guy can get ot the end of the field? well, it sure is hard to run towards a stationary object [vault] and have to flip over it, without getting hurt sticking the ground on two feet, and alos flipping in the air, without falling and breaking something. That's what i call hard. Soccer players say its hard to kick a ball around to the feild and have to make it to the net and kick it in to get points. well on floor, we have to use our whole body, push it upside down, forwars backwards, twisting, in mid air, and have to stick it, 2 feet landing, jsut ot get points. We get deducted for little things. you guys use ur hands, u guys get a foul, we get points decuted for simple things such as taking a extra step after a full twisting layout. I call that hard. Hockey players say they work so hard, when all they do is skate on ice with a stick, and a little circle, that they have to keep track of.. well we jump from bar to bar, go all the way around the bar, without falling on our heads, without slipping off the bar, getting rips the size of qourters on our hands, then letting go of the bar in mid air, aned doing backdlips in the air, and twisting all at one time, i say that's hard, and then having to make another two feet stick. Call, ur sports hard, come try ours(; --

I am an elite gymnast, and yes it's hard, but also very rewarding. My coach pushes me very hard. The training is hard and I tend to get scared a lot.

Another answer:

It requires lots of hard work.

Gymnastics is one of those sports that you have to work on practically 24/7. People say that looks easy when gymnasts do a backhandspring on the beam. It may look easy, but it takes lots of hard work and tons of determination. Gymnastics has given me huge muscles and lots of confidence so that when I fall of the beam or bars, I can get back up.

Yes, gymnastics is very hard. You do get hurt (I know from experience), but the pain is worth it. It is very fun and hard, but as you progress it gets easier.

In some ways I'd disagree with that. Gymnastics should be hard work if you are doing it right and if you want to compete seriously the amount of training required is immense. However as a recreational sport it is very easy to get into because you can enjoy it at any many levels and can continually improve and progress. You don't need to keep pace with a team and if you put work in and attend to your coaches you will have the satisfaction of finding yourself improving and learning new skills pretty quickly.

Gymnastics is the hardest sport to master so if you ever try doing gymnastics make sure that you are prepared. But there is all kind of gymnastics i do regular gymnastics and there are all kind of different levels i am in level 6 and it is hard. A lot of people can not do gymnastics any more if they have got hurt and it ruins there whole career of gymnastics. Also people have died of gymnastics. That is why gymnastics is the hardest sport.

There is no true way to determine the "hardest" sport in the world. In terms of skill, Cheerleading requires lots of strength, power, flexibility, and stamina. But so do many other sports. In terms of danger, cheerleading is one of the most dangerous sports in terms of injury in the world

Yes. I am a gymnast myself and I can tell you that it is a difficult, but rewarding sport. It takes lots of strength, balance, and determination to get to a point where you are very good at it. It takes long hours at the gym, lots of injuries, and frustration, but it is well worth it when you learn the skill you have been wanting to learn your entire life.
