I have had better luck with a Easton Synergy bat myself. It seems to have a little bigger sweetspot for a younger child. As they get older the other might be better. My child is 14 and still swings a Synergy which she started with when she was about 8. It is the 2006 model and still has it's "pop". I do recommend a -10 for balance for a softball player though. She swings a 33/23. I don't know about weight ratio for a boy though. Hope this helps.
