Keeping in mind that it is Babe Ruth, the signature would not be worthless but, it will lower the value significantly. It might also depend on the degree of re-tracing. I have seen an auction recently where the signature on a Baseball was traced over. I can't recall the details but, do remember that the ball sold well below the market value.

One positive is, PSA/DNA will still authenticate the signature, and if it passes, you can get some value for it. I'm sure you will find collectors that will pay for the re-traced signature but, at a discount. It would still most likely sell below the value of a faded or weak signature. It comes down to how many potential buyers you find in the market looking to purchase a Babe Ruth signature that they could not normally afford.

The signature cannot be graded as stated on PSA/DNA website: "PSA will not grade any autograph that has been deemed retraced by a party other than the original signer at the time of the original signing.....While the autograph can be authenticated by PSA/DNA, the intentional alteration of the baseball precludes it from receiving a numerical grade."

Bottom line. To the serious collector that has cash for a Babe Ruth autograph, the signature is worthless. For the Bargain Hunter it is a great find, and a chance to own a Babe Ruth signature at a small percentage of the full market value.

What is the value of a Babe Ruth autographed baseball that has been traced over by an amateur?

Well the ball was signed by the real person, but then traced by an amateur, its not a reall signature. People do this to make a lot of them to be sold in stores. It is most important to never retrace a signature regardless if it is done by an amateur or a Professional. I have been asked this question many times. A baseball with light or faded signatures will be worth more than one that has been traced. The signatures could be worthless. This also holds true for cleaning an autographed baseball. Sharpie is not used for signing baseballs because of the porous properties of the baseball will absorb the ink and it will tend to bleed. The same thing will happen if you try to clean it. The stain might lighten, but will spread to a larger area of the ball. What ever you use to remove the stain will have no problem removing the signatures as well. If any liquid comes in contact with the signatures, your baseball will look like a wet piece of mail. For more information on signed baseballs visit the link I left below.

What is the value of a mint condition present day Mickey Mantle signed baseball card?

A Mickey Mantle single signed baseball is worth about $400.-$600. Price will vary based on condition, and type of authenticity that accompanies the signature. Rare examples of pristine signatures or inscriptions like "The Mick" "HOF 1974" or 536 HR's" could raise the price to the $1,000. price range. Personal inscription like "Good luck Mike" could sell below $400. A rarely signed full name signature "Mickey Charles Mantle" will break the $2,000 price mark as it did in a May 5th 2007 live eBay auction selling for $2,390. Without seeing the degree of the fading it would be hard to put a value on it. If it is not too bad it could still bring a price higher than $200.-$300. The key to the value of the signature would be the letter of authenticity that accompanies the signature. Even if the signature is strong it might only sell for $200.-$300. if it has not been properly authenticated. Depending on the degree of fading $75.- $150. If the signature is not authenticated by a respectable company. Two of the top, and most trusted authenticators are PSA/DNA, and James Spence Authentic (JSA). Collectors will pay more for signatures authenticated by either one. Most important never retrace a signature. I have been asked this question many times. A baseball with a light or faded signature will be worth more than one that has been traced.

How much is an autographed baseball hat by John Smoltz worth?

A "smudged" signature will sell far below the market value of a signature in excellent -near/mint condition.Value is based on average prices of recently closed auctions. Prices may vary based on condition, and the type of authenticity that accompanies the baseball. The most important factor on the value of a signature providing that the signature is authentic is the condition of both the item signed, and the signature. The signature should be strong, and bold, as opposed to faded and hard to see.Value will be determined by the condition (grade) of the signature, the sharpness, clarity, and how well the signature displays overall. Blue ballpoint pen would be most preferred over sharpie which tends to "bleed" or "smudge" on a baseball. The Ballpoint pen would render a sharp signature as opposed to a thick "sloppy" Sharpie signature. What ever ink used, it will "smudge" if improperly handled before it is fully dry. Displaying the signature in a room with high humidity could moisten the ink and cause "smudgeing"Once an autograph has faded or "Smudged" the best you can do is stop further damage by investing in a U/V protective display case. Try to find a Display case with 50% U/V protection. Keep it away from sun light, and chalk it up to experience. Most important never retrace a signature. I have been asked this question many times. A baseball with light or faded signatures will be worth more than one that has been traced. The signatures will be worthless. The Ideal conditions for display would be indirect lighting, at a room temperature of 65 - 70 degrees, and 50% humidity. Always check your signatures periodically for signs of fading or deterioration, and avoid excessive handling.

Is it legal to sign your husbands name on a car title?

No, it is called forgery, and it is a crime. It is never legal under any circumstances to sign another person's name. It is important that your name is always be signed as it appears on your legal identification (i.e. passport, driver's license, and so forth). Never sign another person's name--even if they give you permission.Furthermore, attempts to use software such as Adobe Photoshop to paste a signature (unless it is a legal digital signature) can be traced. That is also forgery.

What is the value of a hand signed 1955 Yankees baseball with the -signatures written over?

A 1955 New York Yankees Team Signed Baseball with the key signatures: Stengel, Rizzuto, Berra, Slaughter, Mantle, Ford, Howard, Martin, and Larsen is worth about $1,200-$2,000.Value is based on average prices of recently closed auctions. Prices may vary based on condition, and the type of authenticity that accompanies the baseball. Prices may also vary based on the amount of signatures, and key signatures acquired. The more complete the baseball with key signatures the more valuable. If the signatures are traced over (written over) The baseball could be close to worthless. Right off the bat, the signatures might not pass as authentic, and PSA/DNA will not even put a grade on it. A baseball or a photo with light or faded signatures will be worth more than one that has been traced. If the signatures are not properly authenticated the baseball could sell at half the market value or less.
