Best Answer

No. It was Ron Turcott

Wrong!

Paul Feliciano was an apprentice and contract rider for Lucien Laurin and rode Secretariat in his first two races as a two year old at Aqueduct.

On July 4, 1972 at Aqueduct, Secretariat's first race, Ron Turcotte was at Monmouth Park riding Summer Guest in the Monmouth Oaks.

Turcotte was injured in a spill a few days before Secretariat's second race and first win on July 15th.

Eddie Maple also rode Secretariat in his last race at Woodbine because Ron Turcotte was suspended for a racing incident.

I do not know what Paul's nationality was.

What did Lucien Loren say to Secretariat before the race?

Best translation I can give is, β€œthat boy doesn’t know who he’s spanking! I will have to work with this horse myself!” basically, Lucian was saying Paul, the jockey, is an inexperienced boy that should never be trusted to jockey Secretariat.

Who spread the rumor about Paul being dead?

The rumor started in an article in a student newspaper at Drake University in Iowa, USA in September, 1969. A month later, the rumor was discussed on WKNR in Detroit when disk jockey Russ Gibb heard about it from a caller. The Michigan Daily published an article about the rumor two days later. Roby Yonge, a disk jockey at WABC in New York, discussed the rumor in October. Because WABC's signal was strong and could be heard in many US cities, the rumor was picked up by many newspapers and media outlets.
