Yes that's quite good. Most intermediate swimmers could manage a mile (70 laps) and so as a beginner 20 laps is a good start. I would recommend trying to increase by 4-6 laps each time you go to allow you to slowly build up your swimming.
An olympic sized pool is 50 metres. If it is a 4x100 Relay one swimmer will swim 2 laps. If each swimmer does two laps and there is 4 of them, 8 laps will have been swum.
