Two runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their gloved fists and wore civil rights buttons at the medal ceremony of the 200 meters in Mexico City in 1968. The silver medalist was a white Australian Peter Norman who did not raise his fist but did wear the civil rights button in support. He remained a good friend of the two for the rest of his life.

podium orDais(pronounced /ˈdeɪ.əs/ or /ˈdaɪ.əs/[1]) is any raised platform located either in or outside of a room or enclosure, often for dignified occupancy, as at the front of a lecture hall or sanctuary.
The podium refers to the raised platform used by the winners of a sporting event to stand on while presented with their awards. Players who place first, second, or third in a competition on Howrse, are said to have "made the podium".
The tri-level podium was first used and introduced in the 1932 Olympic Summer Games held in Los Angeles, California.
The winners in the Women's 100 Metres Hurdles event at the Rio 2016 Olympics were Brianna Rollins, Nia Ali, and Kristi Castlin. Rollins won the gold medal, Ali won the silver medal and Castlin won the bronze medal. All three athletes are from the United States. Thus, the podium was swept by the United States of America.
