First of all, there are two types of lineouts: 1: Quick Lineout; No minimum of players need to be involved in a quick lineout, and you can only take a quick lineout immediatley after the ball goes into touch. A quick lineout DOES NOT need to be over-head. 2: Normal Lineout; There is a minimum of 3 players on each team for a normal line-out (usually more). A normal Lineout DOES need to be over-head*. *The reason a lineout should be taken over-head is that it is much easier to throw in a straight line.
