The groundskeeper Tom Forneris retrieved Mark McGwire's home run ball number 62 (1998). The Baseball was returned to McGwire, and was later sent to the baseball HOF in Cooperstown.

A pitched ball is ruled either a ball or strike based on whether or not it has passed over home plate. Extend the surface of home plate upwards, and that is the zone through which the ball must pass. If a pitched ball does not pass over home plate, but is still caught directly behind home plate (curve ball) it is a ball.
A souvenir -- namely the baseball you caught. In most cases, the only "prize" you earn is the ball that is hit into the stands and you caught. But in cases where the ball has a significance -- like a milestone home run - there is immediate value on the ball. You could sell it or auction it for money.
