explanation of error while the cheetah is the fastest land animal over short distances, a marathon is an endurance race. The cheetah gets tired and lays down, the tortoise's legs are too short and the horse stops for clover, leaving the human to finish!

A marathon is about 26 miles. Over a distance like this, if we compare the performance of the four creatures cited, the turtle will not really have much of a shot. The human can cover the distance in a few hours, as has been proved. The cheetah, the fastest land animal (about 70 miles per hour), only has good speed for a short distance. It doesn't have the stamina to go very fast for very far. It is the horse that would win a race over this distance. A horse could cover the 26 odd miles handily if it just set a good pace and maintained it. A horse can run at 30 to 40 miles per hour, but would not last long at that speed. (We know that pony express riders galloped their mounts, but changed horses at 10- to 15-mile intervals.) But if it cantered or trotted, it would have no difficulty outdistancing the man, and the cheetah cannot lope and cover longer distances as well as a horse can. The equine is the clear winner.
