If buying an older used dirt bike is it better to buy 2 stroke or 4 stroke?
I would buy a 2-stroke for rebuilding purposes and ask for engine performance. The 4 strokes are now FI which helps a lot on durability and performance for the current 4 strokes of this age. You can never go wrong with a 2 smoker though. Easy to work on cheaper to rebuild and depending on how much older the bike is you can probably find parts easier also.

2 strokes are smaller and lighter than the 4's, but if you can make it fit there is no reason you cant swap them out. The electrical syatem will be different though so you had better bring the wiring harness and exhaust over from the donor bike. with all the work involved you would be better off selling the 2 and buying a used 4.

a 2 stroke in the end is a better choice. yes it is true that a 4 stroke gives you more power, and it doesn't over heat as easy, but a 2 stroke will cost you less money to fix, less money on oil and gas, plus a 2 stroke has better initial speed, and a higher speed band. ^^ Actually 4 stroke MX bikes are the ones that are prone to overheating, and if you dump a 4 stroke after an hour in the woods, good luck getting it started again.
