1968 was essentially the peak of the Vietnam conflict. During late 1967 and into 1968, Communist forces initiated a 'seige' of the Khe Sanh Combat Base in the northwest corner of South Vietnam. On January 30th, North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces launched simultaneous attacks in every province of South Vietnam in an attempt to sway the people toward their "unify Vietnam" cause.
The attacks were quickly stopped by U.S. forces with the exception of the city of Hue, a college town south of the DMZ that was once the boyhood home of Ho Chi Minh. The city was held for about three weeks. After that event, CBS News respected newsman Walter Cronkite stood on the streets of Hue and told America that the was was un-winnable. A month later, President Johnson announced that he would not seek re-election. Also in early April, U.S. Army forces relieved the Marines in Khe Sanh and launched major campaigns along the Ho Chi Minh trail on the Laos and Cambodian borders. The Vietnam War peak casualty day was May 5, 1968.
Those events marked the beginning of the end of U.S. support for South Vietnam.
