It was one of the most powerful nations, but lacked economy and was actually a century behind the other European nations. Russia was about to enter WW I which costed it even more money. To show how behind Russia was at this time, some battalions had to use muskets. Oh..and for some of the other questions that were on here...The capital of the Russian empire was Petrograd, the farthest east russia expanded was actually far west, they took over Alaska and owned it until the U.S. bought it in 1867. And the last scribe family of the Russian Court was the Bartkovicz family. it was pronounced biertkovich i think. and the Russian empire was big enough to put over 3 united states in it.

The Romanov dynasty had been ruling Russia in an autocracy for centuries. The Tsar had an established secret police, the Okhrana, and was supported by the most powerful people in the country - the army was controlled by Nobles who supported the Tsar, and the powerful Church in Russia supported his rule.

However, by 1914, serious weaknesses were beginning to show in the Tsar's control of Russia. It was not an easy country to govern: 125 million people spread out over a vast area, made yet more difficult by poor communications & transport links. 90% of Russia's population were peasants, and Russian agriculture was incredibly 'backwards' and in desperate need of modernisation. Despite this, Russia was beginning to industrialise, however poor working conditions led to a large, disaffected workforce concentrated in Petrograd. A smaller, wealthier middle class was also beginning to develop, and they wanted a say in how the government was wrong. These three groups of disaffected Russians made up the majority of the opposition groups to the Tsar, and they were gaining popularity. Russia had been humiliated in a war with Japan, and the Tsar had just barely survived a revolution in 1905. Between 1905 and 1914, he had failed to meet most of the promises he made in his 1905 October Manifesto, which saved his position, and had continually used the Fundamental Law to render the Duma (the new Russian parliament), totally useless.
