The first powered airplane was not constructed during WWII; it was The Wright Flyer (1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright). The Wright Flyer was constructed with a pitch charcoal hull, canvas wings, and a modified piston engine. The plane used the "Warp-Wing" system, which rolled by actual pressure on the wing. Two wooden propellers were connected to the engine by bike chains (the Wrights owned a bike shop). The engine was slightly left (adding extra weight) and the right wing was trimmed about an inch (reducing the lift) to compensate. The finished contraption weighed about 655 lbs.
The Wright brothers were credited with that achievement.
Leonardo DA Vinci drew the first designs for powered flight in 1485 The wright brothers built the first powered aircraft, though others claimed to have don so earlier, but those claims have been discounted.
The first powered flight lasted for 12 seconds.
The first powered, manned flight was completed by one of the many airships built in the 1800's.The first powered, manned Heavier than air flight was completed by Clement Ader in 1890. He flew a short distance from level ground without assistance in the Eole, sponsored by the French Army.
The Wright brothers built and flew gliders before their first successful powered flight.
