The story with Rugby union goes something like this;

In 1823, a boy called William Webb Ellis was playing football (soccer) in Rugby School, Rugby, England and got bored/annoyed with the rules, and so picked up the ball nad ran with it-rugby was born. There is some dispute over this, and a few people claim that it was just a story invented by the school so that their rules would be the ones used by everyone else playing the game. However, it is generally accepted to be true, hece the William Webb Ellis Trophy, or the world cup.

Rugby league, in case that's what you're asking about, was formed in 1895, when the RFU split over a decision to maintain rugby's amateur status. This had major implications for teams in the north of England, who had become very successful, but who were predominately working class. The decision to enforce the amateur status of rugby meant that these successful players couldn't become professional, or receive "broken time payment"-payment for time they had to take from work in order to play.
