Typically you should wait until your dog is 1 year old. If you run with a dog sooner than that you will risk affecting their muscle and bone growth. The repetitive nature of running can stunt their growing bodies. Always check with your doctor before running with your dog. Certain dogs are meant for distance running while other are better for short distances. In addition, if your dog has an under coat, running them in hot temperatures can be very unsafe for their health.
As long as you consider how much further it has to run compared to you both in distance and speed. One step for you is 8-10 for the dog.
