South Africa first used the Springbok emblem on the 1906/07 Tour to the British isles and France. The y were first referred to as "De Springbokken" (The Springboks). see photograph at this link:

The south African rugby team are called the Springboks
Their emblem is a rugby ball outline standing on its point with a palm tree in the balls centre.
The springbok become South Africa's national animal because lot of people liked it and it was hard to discover. Its population began decreasing and also the African people started killing it and selling it in lot of money.
