This site from Steve Jackson games will give you an idea of how many cons they attend every year: http://www.sjgames.com/con/ Large groups, such as this one http://www.boardgamers.org/ host an event every year... but there are bigger events thrown by the gaming industry where new games are unveiled, etc. These are usually held outside the United States. The cool thing about the first site is that it has information and contact people about each of the cons, if they sound interesting. :)
