What does mint julep taste like?
Most recipes recommend using fresh spearmint for a mint julep, however it really depends on the drinker's taste for mint. A stronger mint flavor would require peppermint or chocolate mint. Milder flavors would go more with apple mint or one of the others like pineapple mint. However I would NOT recommend using lemon mint unless you like the smell of citronella.

The toppings add just about as many calories as the custard; for instance, when I go to Sheridan's I get a quart of butterscotch. A cup of butterscotch syrup is about 900 calories, and they probably put about half a cup in a quart. So in this case, the toppings make up half of the total calories for the dessert (total calories = 1500).
