I was intrested in the economics of this also. After searching for a while, I found the answer.

"According to Charles Coplin, the National Football League's chief of halftime shows for four years"..they performers are paid..$0.00.

Basically the article said that the artists get such high exposure and a subsequent spike in album sales they do not need to offer direct compensation.

I would have thought they got something. Ithink they were safe with Petty not taking off any clothes. (thankfully!!!)
