I was intrested in the economics of this also. After searching for a while, I found the answer.

Basically the article said that the artists get such high exposure and a subsequent spike in album sales they do not need to offer direct compensation.

I would have thought they got something. Ithink they were safe with Petty not taking off any clothes. (thankfully!!!)
