The Yankees originated in Baltimore in 1901. They were originally known as the Baltimore Orioles from 1901-1902. In 1903 they moved to New York and changed their name to the New York Highlanders, which was the teams name through the 1912 season. In 1913 the team became officially known as the New York Yankees.
