Australia first qualified for the World Cup in the 1974 competition, though they did not get past the first round, achieving one draw and two losses from their three games in the competition.

Having failed to qualify for the competitions between 1978 and 2002, Australia qualified once again in 2006, thirty-two years later. They got through to the second round of the competition, where they were drawn against Italy in the second round, the team which went on to win the competition.

The 2010 tournament sees their third appearance in the competition, where they are facing Germany, Ghana and Serbia in the Group phase.
